Best & Worst Diets
Posted By: John Matarese (www.wcpo.com)

Consumer Reports Article

It seems someone is always coming up with a new diet that claims it's a surefire way to shed pounds.
So how do you know which one delivers results?

Consumer Reports magazine just crunched the numbers, analyzing available scientific data, to come up with the best diet plan out there.

Temptations are everywhere, but especially when you're trying to lose weight.

And it seems there are just about as many diet plans jockeying for your attention.

Our partners at Consumer Reports have just analyzed a whole host of diet programs and books, based on the latest scientific data on what makes a successful diet. Consumer Reports rated eight diet plans that have been studied in clinical trials, including Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Slim-Fast, and Atkins. "We looked at actual scientific studies of the diets and we rated them on how much weight people lost, how easy they were to stick to, and how well they conformed with U.S. Dietary Guidelines." Consumer Reports says the most successful diet -- well worth spending your money on-- is the "Volumetrics Eating Plan."

Nancy Metcalf, Consumer Reports: "It's based on research that's been done at Penn State University. The principal is to fill up on low-density foods, foods that have a lot of volume for the amount of calories."

With Volumetrics, instead of a piece of coffee cake for breakfast, for the same 400 calories you could have a lot more food.

And these low-density foods are likely to fill you up sooner so you don't overeat.

--After Volumetrics, Consumer Reports found Weight Watchers was the second best diet.

-- And Jenny Craig came in as a very close third.

--The two lowest rated diet plans? The Ornish Diet, and the Atkins Diet, which both have high dropout rates.

--When it comes to popular diet books, Consumer Reports top ratings go to:

--The Best Life Diet by Bob Greene, and Eat, Drink, and Weigh Less by Mollie Katzen.

But Consumer Reports says don't expect miracles: even the highest-rated diets and books generally produce less than a ten percent weight loss after a year.

Fat Smash is a "diet" that was developed by Dr. Ian Smith. It was made popular on the show Celebrity Fit Club (which I've never even seen). The link tells all about it. The book is only 12.95 in stores and about $7 on Amazon, if you're willing to wait for it.

I start Phase II today, Day 10 of FS. I weighed myself this morning and I am now at 173. I lost a total of 9.5lbs on Phase I of FS (9 days). My first indulgence today? I'm gonna buy a grape Propel Fitness Water. I can't wait to taste it, lol.

Talking Post happy?

lol, I don't know what's wrong with me. I have HELLA energy. WITH NO CAFFEINE!!!! It's amazing. Anyway, TNT. Y'all, I love it already. I'm going to set up my fundraising site today and of course I'll post it here. But I'm loving TNT!!! Our Kick-off party is tonight and I can't wait. I've already gotten two emails from my mentor, and I just talked to her on the phone for the first time yesterday. So already, I'm loving the support I'm receiving. I'd also been in touch with one of the coaches by email. Everyone is so encouraging. I love it. Don't know if I'm ready for training yet, lol, but I'm lovin' it.

I'm such a slacker (well super busy at work and no time at home with a toddler). But I still haven't done my website yet. Maybe today. I'm jealous, I haven't heard from my mentor YET! We get emails every Wednesday night from our mentor. Maybe it went to bulk and I automatically trashed it.

My kick off party is may 16th. I can't wait.

I just signed up for the Fat Smash forum posted by Ideal. I was getting a weird authorization request last night, but today it was up and running, so I signed up. I saw that there is a gang of recipes on there and that's what I am ALWAYS looking for! It's so easy to get stuck in a rut during Phase I. You have to be fully equipped! I can't wait to try some of them out!

Soror RD, why'd you delete the link for the yahoo group? I think that's helpful, too.

I don't know much about the forum that I posted, lol. I did that for informational purposes. So I don't know if it costs money or what.

I think I may be done with FS; I don't think I'll be able to do that and eat properly to train for this marathon. I'm going to need pasta, especially, so I have to abandon FS. But I'll still keep everything I learned and continue with that.

That being said, I ate two pieces of pizza last night at my Kick-Off Celebration. Details in My Fantastic Voyage.

No meat today, though.

Here's the link again: Fat Smash Yahoo Group

My bad! Once you submit your membership info, they are pretty quick about adding you. They also allege that Dr. Ian pops in from time to time to answer questions, but I've never witnessed any of his posts for the yr. or so that I have been on. It's still a good resource for anyone thinking about FS or on FS.
