Or even later. Remember that Hogwarts is in Scotland, somewhere north of Edinburgh. When I've been in Edinburgh in late June, it was still light at 10:30.

I figured it might be a European thing, but since when was Hogwarts in Scotland? I thought it was in Northern England?

No, it's clearly in Scotland, and always has been.
There are a few ways to tell -- the mountains around the school more accurately describe the Scottish Highlands than anywhere in England. But there are other, more specific, clues. The Hogwarts Express travels north from London, and the trip is long enough to end up in Scotland. Also, in Book 2, Snape is showing Harry and Ron Evening Prophet reports of people who saw the flying Ford Anglia. One of the reports is from Peebles, which is in Scotland.
If that's not enough, JKR said so.

OKay, smarty pants, I'll take your word for it. But weren't Harry and Ron spotted when they first took off from King's Cross, still in London? That's when the invisibility function wasn't working and they were afraid people would see them.

They dipped below the clouds multiple times to make sure they knew where the train was, and they mentioned passing other towns. I don't remember where they were spotted, but Hogwarts is definately up in Scotland

From HP and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 5, "The Whomping Willow":
You were seen, [Snape] hissed, showing them the headline: FLYING FORD ANGLIA MYSTIFIES MUGGLES. He began to read aloud: "Two Muggles in London, convinced they saw an old car flying over the Post Office Tower . . . at noon in Norfolk, Mrs. Herry Bayliss, while hanging out her washing . . . Mr. Angus Fleet, of Peebles . . . reported to police . . . Six or seven Muggles in all.
