Sure, 99% of us joined a group because of the quality of the local chapter. Few 18 year-olds think beyond what's right in front of them. To me, it was a terrific boon to later realize what an outstanding national organization I had joined. The benefits are many.
FYI:
Current #s for Chi Omega:
Over 300,000 initiated members
171 active collegiate chapters
(Both stats are #1 among NPCs)

You must be an undergrad. After college, your National org matters more. And since you spend 4-6 years as an undergrad and 30+ as an alum, your National should matter to you.

Agreed, when you first pledge, you are thinking (most likely) only of the local chapter.
After you become an alumni you hold your chapter dear, but even more so the national reputation, tradition and strength.

Also, sometimes undergraduades (or alumnae/i for that matter) from prestigious schools think that the individuals from their specific chapter are all more outstanding than the members of the national organization as a whole.
Some finally open their eyes eventually and are pleasantly surprised that there are indeed outstanding members from EVERY chapter!

Very true. Though I know that many undergraduates don't give a lot of thought to that. (I suppose I didn't at the time, but I was very fortunate to still end up in an organization that I'm very happy with on an International level.)
(Just realized that I've been an alumnae longer than I was an undergraduate member already. Hadn't thought of it in those terms before.)
