REE, it sounded to me that the roller skating was the Bid Day activity. I'm guessing the women carpooled there, probably with actives driving the new members (at least, that's how it's done at my school on Bid Day). If I recall, the article said there were bottles at the roller rink, which means drinking was happening at the activity.

Is anyone else disturbed that the chapter in question was already on probation when this happened, and yet they still thought this was a good idea? I think more than a "risk management seminar" is warranted here...these ladies broke a bunch of laws/rules. That's the old Panhellenic VP of Ethics/Standards comin' out in me.

Unless the pledges brought the alcohol to the event without the chapter's knowledge.

I agree with Peppy, in that already having a recent violation should suggest hyper vigilence.

People need to realize that they cannot take chances like this anymore. Many GLOs have strict no-alcohol policies, and (informal) policies regarding pledges/members in training. It's all about common sense here.

If you are going to 1. break the law, 2. disobey NPC or nationals's guidelines, and 3. disobey campus guidelines (even if the event happened off-campus, it being sponsored puts the situation in a very controversial jurisdiction situation), you have to be nuts to do it in a public place. Not that I advocate doing it in a private place, but have these people no sense at all?

Everyone should be patted-down for these events, or prohibited/discouraged from drinking underage and/or at formal AND informal chapter events. I am no goody-goody and by no means innocent, but anything you do these days, especially if you are in a GLO, is being watched.

THIS is how Greeks get the reputation. Sorry, I am just very frustrated that after all these years, deaths, hospitalizations, accidents, etc., this still happens.

The Dartmouth Kappa Kappa Gamma chapter has been placed on "social probation until March 27, 2007," according to the student paper. An article (URL below) says that KKG was NOT determined to have violated the anti-hazing rules in the college's code of conduct. The paper also reports this:

In addition to its probation, Kappa will participate in alcohol education, as well as organize alcohol education events for the CFS community. According to the Office of the Dean of the College statement, Kappa will also be required to present several other educational programs to the CFS community during the summer of 2007, and "must also work with their national organization to address communication issues and compliance with Dartmouth and national organization policies."

So you don't violate rules and you still get punished? "Tis a fair court."

From the article.

Quote:
"Despite avoiding hazing and alcohol charges, the committees found that Kappa violated the College Standard of Conduct for threatening or causing harm to individuals, as well as the terms of its probation."

Right, they broke the law, which most schools would consider in violation of proper conduct for student organizations. And they did it while they were on probation.

Nelson acknowledged that Kappa's probation is not meant to serve as a deterrent from new violations.

"It clearly wasn't before," Nelson said, referring to the fact that Kappa was already on probation at the time of the incident. "I think in any situation like this, what the College tries to work with is some measure of accountability and a lot of emphasis on education and prevention."

"I think the whole situation has had a tremendously positive impact in the long run on the members of [Kappa] and how they view their responsibilities to one another as members of an organization," Nelson said.
Kappa President Whitney Dickerson '07 also saw the experience as a positive one.

Does anyone else find this a bit laughable?
