Okay, the definition of "FRATERNITY" in my New Member Manual states: "a group of people associated for a common purpose".

Prior to 1882, these organizations were referred to as "womens fraternities". It wasn't until 1882 that Professor Frank Smalley coined the term "sorority" for GPhiB.

I've been taught that even though ADPi was founded as a secret society in 1851 (Phi Mu in 1852), they are still the first womens fraternity. After all, these are women who associated for a common purpose, and that's what a fraternity is.

In addition to that, Kappa Alpha Theta claims another first--the first to be founded with Greek letters.
