Son, I have been working as an advertising and marketing professional since you were in middle school. You don't give the public-at-large enough credit for general intelligence. Yes, branding by color is important (thus the importance of not diverting from branded colors), but so is your message. If you approach someone in a shirt, they're going to remember your name and some details of the conversation. You can emphasize over and over again "Phi Tau does this, Phi Tau does that." They will remember the name if they're interested and if you do a good job of getting your name out on campus, you'll have done your job.

It's just a t-shirt. It can purple with orange hearts on it. Your marketing materials, however, should be in official colors.
