Is the party here in NYC? The only time I've bought gifts is for 'big' birthdays like a 25th or 30th. In general if it's at a bar I don't brings a gift bc I'll buy the birthdaygal a drink or give her a gift at a later time. Too much stuff gets lost/left/stolen from bars!
