Because you were the nerdy, dorky, ugly duckling band geek in high school who was picked on by the popular kids and who had a huge crush on the captain of the football team or on the head cheerleader but was never noticed

And so you want to join a sorority or fraternity because you think it's going to make you cool and you're going to be "Miss Popularity" or "Big Man On Campus"
