I start my swimming lessons tomorrow morning! I'm excited and nervous. I am ready to learn because I want to swim for fitness, but I am TERRIFIED of deep water. Hopefully I can overcome my fear. That's the plan!

Soror,
Do you already swim and this is in dep water or are you a complete novice? I can't swim at all, and I have tried to have my husband teach me but my rational fear of the water always takes over, (plus my husbands theory about getting my hair wet) I want to learn so bad!! Let me know how it goes, good luck!

Soror, I am a step BELOW novice! LOL! I know NOTHING about swimming. We started with the basic today. I had to learn how to float. I am currently working on breathing and the breaststroke.
It may be best to learn from someone other than your husband. If I can suggest anything, I would suggest that you take group lessons. They are offered at the Y. When I got there, it was just me and the Soror that is teaching me. Even though it may seem cool to have the personal attention, there is nothing else to distract the instructor. When the focus is all on you, combined with the anxiety that you may already have, it makes you a little more nervous. Sometimes you just want to be left alone to figure it out. Once some other "students" got there, I was able to relax. I was no longer the only one who didn't know what I was doing. I was actually able to help them relax as well.
I am still between 3 and 4 feet. I am NOT NEARLY ready for deep water. I want to hyperventilate just thinking about it! LOL! I'll let you know how it goes!

Hi Sorors, Just wanted to add that I am also afraid of the water and I took swimming lessons last year at the Y also. I found out that one-on-one classes are usually also available for a few dollars more (like $2-3 more per lesson). Soror RD, I know that you already have a one-on-one by default, which is great, but I was really scared of being in a big class and my teacher not seeing me if I go under so Soror Wonderful I signed up for the one-on-one. Also, he instructor informed me that there are various techniques that they are trained in to teach you that those who have not been trained in swimming instruction may not have in their bag of tricks. For this reason, an instructor other than your husband (assuming that he isn't trained in giving lessons) may be beneficial.
Either way, good luck Sorors with the swimming!! I still can't swim but at least I can put my head under water w/out losing it.

Yes, I agree that one-on-one is the way to go once you are comfortable. However, initially, when/while we are learning the "basics," it's cool to know that you aren't the only one.
As I was loosening up and learning a little bit faster than others, she eventually took me to the deep end. Once she starts instruction on the deep end of the pool, instruction shifts to one-on-one. She wouldn't DARE leave anyone over there alone. I don't think that anyone would allow her to leave them! I know I didn't!! LOL!
I would also have to agree with Soror SC in that it is best to learn from a certified instructor. Just because someone knows how to swim doesn't mean that they can teach others how to do it. My Soror has been swimming since she was 2, is certified, and serves as a lifeguard as well. I feel VERY comfortable with her. It's just the water that I need to loosen up with! LOL!!

Soror, I guess you are *starting out* better than me b/c I needed one-on-one even in the 3 feet deep part of the water. LOL. I have had a big phobia of the water since I was dunked into Lake Michigan several times by someone who thought that it was funny when I was in about the 4th or 5th grade. Girl, the only that I feel comfortable in is the tub. LOL. I get nervous in a jacuzzi.
Good luck with your lessons!! How are they coming along? Have you found any good solutions for keeping your hair moisturized and healthy while taking lessons? I swear that my biggest problem with exercise is that I sweat in my head and it messes up my hair. B/c I am trying to go get it done once a week now, it is almost just a waste of money even if I exercise just three times a week! What can we do? Who knows....

Soror,
Bad experiences like that ill turn a person off to water forever. I was thrown in deep water by someone after I had already stated that I couldn't swim. It turned me off. Now, all these years later, I am trying to conquer that fear.
As for my hair, I just pull it into a puff and put on a swimming cap. Once, I wet my hair, put condition on it, covered it with a shower cap, then put on my swimming cap. That worked well. Then, when I got home, I just rinsed. It kept my hair soft. I think I might go back to that.
