Fraternities/Sororities in Classic Movies

(And I mean OLD movies - I'm not counting anything made from 1980-present because they're too recent. )

I recently caught the movie Good News (1947) with June Allyson and Peter Lawford on Turner Classic Movies. The theme of the movie is kind of tired (shy, librarian type meets football hero and they fall in love) but what was interesting to me is the sorority house in the movie was a very central location. When the women weren't in class or at the soda shop, they were at the house.

The women wore their pins everywhere and all the time, so I had plenty of occasions to try to figure out what sorority they were a member of. I never could figure it out, but according to IMDB, Pi Phi was used in the original musical.

Can anyone else think of any old movies where fraternities/sororities were prominently featured?

I think they're Kappas but in the musical, they sing "A Girl of the Pi Beta Phi", which is actually one of our Pi Phi songs!

I love old movies, in fact the majority of the movies in my collection are from before 1950. Despite this, I'm not too familiar with that many early college movies, only three come to mind, College Humor from 1933 and She Loves Me Not from 1934, both staring Bing Crosby, and Too Many Girls from 1940 staring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz (they met on the set of the film). I don't recall any of them having fraternities or sororities, though.

I was able to find two fraternity related movies, though. I have a recording of Dean Martin singing "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi," and after looking up a little history on Dino's recording, I found out there are two movies called The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, the first from 1933 and the second from 1946.

Actually, they switched it to a ficticious sorority for the movie "Good News." From IMDB:

Quote:
The original musical was based on the an actual sorority, Pi Beta Phi. The song, "The Girl of the Pi Beta Phi" was kept on the 1996 soundtrack, but deleted from the 1947 film. The name of the sorority was changed in the 1947 movie to the fictitious "Phi Gamma Gamma".
Very cute movie, though.
