I don't watch the View religiously but as I recall, she basically solicited vendors to provide free stuff for her wedding in exchange for having the items on the show (i.e. free advertising for the vendor and free stuff for Ms. Jones). I guess it just left a bad taste in some people's mouths because they felt as though she was blantantly using her celebrity to get free stuff. I think it's a bit tacky, but apparently the View viewers and the ABC/View ppl thought it was a big deal.

When the Today Show "Throws a Wedding," does NBC pay for those items that the couple receives or is it FREE?

Because there's no way that Star could have afforded a classy wedding without freebies.

The Today Show generally throws weddings for people who's bank accounts don't resemble the budget of a small country.

I still don't see what's the big deal. Maybe it is because weddings period don't interest me that much. Get married in a cardboard box...or in a castle. I couldn't care less. Yeah, with her bank account it was unneccessary, but not flat out wrong. She didn't hold a gun up to their heads. It was a personal preference.

Not only that, don't the viewers pick everything and the bride & groom have to live with it? I wouldn't care if it was the best money could buy, that would be my idea of hell.

How do you know how much money she has?? I'm sure she has more than the two of us combined...from years being a lawyer and definitely from being an on-air personality!

Besides if there was such a problem with her doing what she did, why didn't ABC say something about that earlier! It seems like they needed a cop-out...i'm not buying it.

I'm sorry, you must have misunderstood.

[begin sarcasm] Because there's no way that Star could have afforded a classy wedding without freebies. [/end sarcasm]

Like I said, I'm quite sure her bank account rivals that of a small country.

I actually just saw an article online a couple days ago about how the producers made all the View co-hosts attend a meeting where they were told to stop accepting freebies because it put Disney/ABC in a bad position. But Star continued to take home freebies even after they were told not to. I can't find the article but I'm still looking for it.

Edit: Found it. http://www.celebrityscum.com/?p=143

“She was always very self-absorbed and was always putting the show and the company [ABC] in a very funny position,” the insider said. “She would compromise everything by demanding and getting free stuff - breaching all sorts of [ABC owner] Disney policies.”

In one instance, the source said, the show’s co-hosts were told to attend a meeting where they were asked by producers to stop accepting expensive gifts.

A few weeks later, after appearing on an episode that originated from Dallas, Jones went home with a pair of diamond-studded cowboy boots that had been featured in a fashion segment, according to the source.”

Here is just Star's side from the transcript of the Larry King interview.

KING: Did you get a lot of freebies?

REYNOLDS: And I didn't get any money, absolutely the...

KING: You did?

REYNOLDS: There's no question that I used my celebrity as it related to making those wedding plans. There's also no question that this was an...

KING: Against ABC policy though.

REYNOLDS: Absolutely not.

KING: Not?

REYNOLDS: One hundred percent absolutely not. I've never had the opportunity to explain this but since the network decided they wanted to talk about it I will. There was an agreement between the network and me as to what segments I would do on "The View" and they insisted that they make the phone calls on my behalf.

KING: To get the...

REYNOLDS: In exchange for using certain people on the air, et cetera, et cetera. But I was not allowed to because that's a violation. Now, I'm a lawyer. Remember, I know how to not violate the law.

KING: So there was no exchange of gifts, no quid pro quo?

REYNOLDS: Where I would say oh, I'm going to get this cup as long as I talk about it on "The View," under no circumstances.

Nice non-answers and bonus points for throwing in an irrelevant comment about being a lawyer. HEY GUYS, I'M A LAWYER and guess what? It has nothing to do with anything!

I don't necessarily believe it. But it could be true. Just like it could be true that Star's side of the story is the truth.
