In the NPHC world the term frat is perfectly acceptable and is commonly used.

But isn't that really only used between brothers?? A Kappa wouldn't use "frat" for an Alpha, right?

Yes. That would be like me calling an AST sister without saying "Panhellenic" in front of it.

You are right ladygreek, but I didn't want to confuse the OP as she's not talking about NPHC groups. And I really didn't want her to walk up to an Alpha or Kappa and say "Hey frat boy!"

Well, I bet she'd never say it again after THAT kind of experience.

He would be more offended by the word boy than the word frat. To us frat is just a shortened term for fraternity or fraternity brother: nothing more, nothing less.

To add to this, in the NPHC fraternity brothers also call each other 'Frater' as we in the sororities call each other Soror.

You wouldn't call your country a c*nt, therefore you would never call your fraternity a frat.

By the same token, I wouldn't want the OP to hear NPHC orgs using it and thinking we are uneducated and low-class.

Did I missed the part where the OP indicated which group or culture or whatever they were referring to?

She's been going on and on in the rush forum about NPC rush, so we all figured that's what she was asking about.

ETA: The reason Sheila didn't want it to seem OK to her is because if she's going through NPC rush at UFC, saying "frat" during rush can and probably will get her dropped from that house.

Maybe. For example they might say "My cousin is one of your frat." Or "what does your frat have planned for Greek Week?"

The guys say frat. The ladies say soror.

No. They are all in "frats" although they are not all "frat."

He wouldn't call an Alpha "frat" but some say "frater."

Either way, and the point that ladygreek was making, "frat" and "frats" don't hold a negative connotation in the NPHC.
