It's a legitimate question that I don't recall having seen before.
As past threads on the word "frat" have shown, this is a matter of personal preference.
I don't like the word used in any manner -- but a lot of people aren't bothered by it at all.
I have always used "fraternity" to describe a group, a house, a man (or woman since most sororities actually consider themselves fraternities), a party or whatever the word is used with.
I'm really not crazy about the word "fratty."
But, that's only my opinion.

"Frat" as a noun, verb, or adjective is trashy and vulgar. Don't use it unless you want to sound uneducated and low class.

In the NPHC world the term frat is perfectly acceptable and is commonly used.

But isn't that really only used between brothers?? A Kappa wouldn't use "frat" for an Alpha, right?

Ugggggh. My brother says that. In all seriousness. All the time. It is so painful.
Anyway, I don't really see what the big deal is with "frat", but I try not to say it because you never know who it is a big deal to.

There is a big difference between "frats" and Fraters as has been pointed out.
Frat are for boys, and Fraternity is for Men.
Just think if You are a female/male what do You want to be called?
If people do not like it, then dont use it!
