What does that matter? When I talk about my family history, I say "we" - i.e., "We came from Germany during the Revolutionary War and settled in Georgia" or "We lived in Dacula for a long time" or "We were poor", even though I wasn't around them. It's part of being connected to your heritage. Who are you to challenge that?


Assimilation has nothing to do with skin color. It's about customs, and culture, not about color.


You honestly think that someone who is black or dark-skinned Latina/o or Asian, or in any other way more obviously physically different from the "American" Anglo-Saxon norm, can assimilate into society in the same way that, for example someone who is Irish or German or French can? You can change your customs and your culture, and even your last name if you have to, but you are going to have a hell of a time trying to change your skin color.


And before I get further accused of being racist, I do have friends that are black, and I don't think of them any different then my white or hispanic friends, or for that matter, my Mexican husband.
