"Southern" Sororities? - Page 11

So this is kind of a question to the ladies of ADPi and Phi Mu...

I'm taking a class about southern women and writers, and we have to do a research project. I really want to do mine about the role of sororities in southern life, and my professor is super enthusiastic about it. I know some of you have been down to Macon to visit the birthplace of ADPi and Phi Mu, and I was thinking of going down there and doing some research. Do you think it would be worthwhile? I really want to get some oral histories, too, so I'm thinking of interviewing women I know about their sorority experience.

I really want to focus the project on "southern" sororities, but there isn't exactly a definitive list!

you might also want to check out delta gamma-founded in mississippi and

kappa delta, sigma sigma sigma, zeta tau alpha and alpha sigma alpha, all founded at longwood college in farmville, va.

and chi omega, which was founded in arkansas

You could probably do just as well in the Atlanta/Peachtree City area, what with both Phi Mu & ADPi being located there. That, or contact the Georgia Wesleyan College for information. I'm sure that they have tons of records on some of their older alumnae. After all, it was also the first college for women in the United States, too.

Sororities from my personal experience which are truly involved in southern values/traditions...

Kappa (not here, but still)
Chi O
Tri Delt
Pi Phi
Phi Mu....
ADPi
Alpha Gam
Alpha Chi

Also, I wanted to respond to the PTC comment. While Fayette produces plenty of greeks for schools like UGA, Tech, Auburn, and Clemson, I don't think PTC would be helpful. It is basically a town of yankee transplants, and it truly is sad to see FC(being PTC, fville, brooks, and tyrone), all going downhill.

It is basically a town of yankee transplants, and it truly is sad to see FC(being PTC, fville, brooks, and tyrone), all going downhill.

I had to read like 6 times to get what "PTC" is....then again I'm sure if you have read any of the posts between Pennsylvanians the same thing happened to you.

To my knowledge, Metro Atlanta period is at least 50% yankee anymore!

I mentioned "PTC" because that's where Phi Mu HQ is, not for any other reason. ADPi Executive Office has been in Atlanta since 1955, but the new addition is just filled with interesting historical information.

ACK!!!!! Primanti's Brothers is NOT a deli!!!! It's a trucker sandwich shop that's been hijacked into a "fast food" restaurant!!

It all started because it only OPENED at 12 midnight to 8 am, which is when you really need to have that hot mess of a sandwich! It became "the" place to go, and the rest is history.

Katz's, Shotsky's, plus all of the NYC corner deli's qualify as deli's, not Primanti's!

And what exactly was in Fayette County that was so great before? Not that PTC is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but seriously - I am so sick of people in Fayette County bemoaning the "tainting" of their "wonderful" county just because - heaven forbid! - Yankees and minorities live here now. Get the hell over it. (Oh, and one other thing you can thank PTC for - they influenced the backwards city of Fayetteville to allow restaurants to sell alcohol by the drink, so there are actually decent places to eat now!)

For those yelling about journalists/journalism:

After a writer makes copy, it is out of their hands. It may go to sub editors, copy editors, editors, web posters, the janitor, etc. There job is to get as much correct as humanly possible. Sometimes it comes back for clairification. Other times the copy edit desk makes a copy change based on an assumption...something may be correct in grammar, but the change means something similar but different. Other times, during page placement/web placement, paragraphs get cut/pasted, and sometimes in the wrong order. It happens. Journalists, newsdesks, and printers are HUMAN. We do our best, but mistakes are what corrections are for.

In addition, many papers don't have style guides on Greek Life. (example, calling a sorority a sorority when it is in fact a fraternity). It is not in the AP style guide, so often they just go by what they know, and if it is a last minute thing, it may very well be wrong. Best thing to do? Send a letter with the CORRECT style (prefering to be called a fraternity), to help them avoid these things in the future. Perhaps get the local Alumn Panhellenic to send a "brief of information" about each sorority in the area...they probably allready have one made in some sort of compact form. Papers do hang on to these things.

No. The operative word was "trucker". The Primanti sandwich was designed so a trucker could supposedly drive while eating it. Remember, it's a "full meal" on two slabs of Italian bread! Read the whole story!
