"Southern" Sororities?

Normally, I would avoid this discussion, but using a newspaper from TinyTown whose reporter couldn't get one of the sororities' name right, and debutauntes with strapless dresses, I'm not terribly impressed.

Some people love the South, others make fun of it. The most important thing is to know who YOU are, and to fit into your own life!

I had talked to my mother soon after posting that, and she was totally mystified! "Debs can go strapless? Why bother coming out if you can't follow basic rules?" I'll censor the rest, but it had to do with a handbasket.

When I made my debut back in 1999 some girls were wearing strapless, which seems to be a trend. My sister made her debut in 2003 and she wore a strapless dress. It doesn't bother me but I know it would bother me because I am not a fan of strapless dresses.

My main bother is the debs who don't wear long white kid skin gloves. I actually still have my pair, not sure why I am saving them, but when I see a deb wearing long white fabric gloves that just bothers me...I also cannot stand it when a debs dress is not the proper length and you can see her feet...but that's just me...and I'm not an authority...just my personal preference.

I made my debut 20 years ago. We couldn't have bare shoulders or backs and even though those were the club's rules, my mother would NEVER have let me wear anyhting like that. I am on the fence about strapless gowns. I have witnessed too many near wardrobe malfunctions where the deb is coming down the stairs and steps on the front of her dress! I do agree about length and kid gloves.

More Debutantes and Their Sororities

Yet another list, this time of the women recently presented in Midland, Texas, at the Petroleum Club. I counted at least seven different NPC sororities mentioned, including Zeta Tau Alpha, Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Zeta, Delta Gamma, Delta Delta Delta, and Chi Omega. No description of dresses, however.

While this may still be pretty much a "Tiny Town" event by the standards of large metropolitan areas, the story is of some interest
just because of what it may reveal about the importance attached to debutante traditions -- and sororities -- in parts of Texas.

I could have missed the mention of a sorority or two; if I did, I apologize.

Before one more "TinyTown" reference is made, may I clarify something? The reporter for the original paper could not even get the name of an NPC sorority right! I have no problem with debuts, or debutantes (well, maybe one or two). I do have a problem with poor reporting, people whose need to rebel ruins everyone else's evening, and women who "come out" who really should have "stayed in".

Now, Ole Miss Glitter informs us that she & her sister were permitted to wear strapless dresses, and knowing the lady she is, I imagine that is the current trend. I also agree with her that a strapless dress without evening gloves of kid just does not pull off the true, blue blood Debut.

Finally, it's quite lovely that the local newspapers report on these debuts. It's even nicer when a big newpaper reports on them. Asking them to get the names right is not asking too much!!

This is the one of the biggest moment some of these women may ever have, and getting her name and information isn't investigative reporting, it's common sense. That's what angered me.

And it appears one woman was related to a guy who escorted a different woman.

This is one of those rare occasions where I agree with James.

It seems that these women are all touted as having all of this involvement and many accomplishments under their belt. So why on earth would an event at the age of 18 be the biggest event of their lives? Are they going to turn around and never do anything noteworthy again in their lives? I would seriously doubt it.

Yay for them for doing something fun, but if this is the biggest day of their lives, I feel sorry for them. And sorry for their future husbands, as getting married is usually seen as the biggest day of a person's life.

Word. For this to be the biggest day of their entire lives, they'd probably have to be planning on never having a career, a husband, or kids . . . Let's not exaggerate too much here. There's no excuse for sloppy journalism, but this is not a tragedy by any means.
