Who really buys high end fashion items?

I look for quality, not just designer names. However, most high-quality stuff is made by designers. For my every day wear, I stick to basics from mall stores like J.Crew/Banana, but for accessories and dressing up, I buy most of my pieces from boutiques and "nicer" department stores (like Saks). So I'm a mix-n-matcher as well.

ETA: I forget to mention that a lot of my nicer pieces have been handed down to me from my mother, so that costs $0! She tends to go through phases of types of clothes that she likes, so once a year, she'll go through a major wardrobe overall, and I reap the benefits of that.
