Miss Emily Butterfield felt the third coat-of-arms, known as the Bastard Crest, was heraldicaly inappropriate, explaining that the dagger in it "formed a bend sinister." In the rules of healdry, the bend was changed to a bend sinister (lower left to upper right of the field to denote illegitimacy.
