I got my belly button pierced around Christmas time...and now I think I was my cartilage pierced. One of my best friends has the cartilage pierced...one on each ear and she said it hurt a lot. Then my aunt had hers and said it doesnt.
It all depends on people's bodies. My friend pierced her belly button about 2 or 3 months after me and hers is already healed while mine still isnt. Fortunately I didn't get any infections, but that is always a risk.
Just as long as you clean it properly and for the length of time that the piercing parlor suggests (usually around 6 weeks) then your risk of infection is greatly reduced. It all depends on your body.
A suggestion for those who want their NAVEL pierced---get the curved barbell. It is a little bit more expensive, but everywhere i've gone said that it heals the quickest, plus it doesn't get caught on clothes like the ring will.
