It's bread. When placed on a dinner table during a feast, it looks like a pound cake. The exterior is "hard", but the interior is just like a homemade roll/bread (it tastes like the rolls from ryan's, golden corral, o'charley's). I don't know where it came from. My aunt got the recipe from a colleague and made it one holiday. It became a "hit" and was part of the menu for years until she passed away.
Why is it called monkey bread? I do not know.
