Yours truly has been appointed to the City of Raleigh Human Relations Commission - - -


About The Commission
The Human Relations Commission consists of thirteen (13) members who reside in the corporate limits of the City of Raleigh and hold a strong interest in human relations. Members are appointed for two year terms according to the rules and procedures for appointments to city boards and commission by Council to this Commission. The Human Relations Commission serves as an advisor to the Council with respect to human services and human rights.

Definition
Human Relations is defined as those activities which promote human dignity, equal opportunity, and harmony among the many Raleigh citizens. This includes those activities and programs classified as promoting the general well-being of citizens, without regard to race, color, creed, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin in their daily activities.

The City of Raleigh's Human Relations Commission serves as an advocate for all people regardless of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, martial status, economic status or age in pursuit of human and economic relationships; promotes activities, education and programs which enhance human dignity, equal opportunity, mutual respect, and harmony among Raleigh citizens.

Created by Ordinance No. (1977) 474; Amended by Ordinance No. (1983) 190; Ordinance No. (1984) 260; membership increased to 18 by Ordinance No. (1993) 131 adopted 2/2/93. Renamed and Size Reduced to 13 members by Ordinance No. (2004) 591. Reduction in number members to be by attrition.

Section 7 of ordinance 1977-474 states: That Human Relations Commission shall serve as an advisory to the City Council with respect to human services and human rights. Specifically, the Human Relations Commission may:

1. Evaluate socio-economic human services needs.
2. Review and comment on plans and analyses developed by the Department of Community Services for human services needs.
3. Monitor the trends and activities in human relations in the City.
4. Advise the City Council with respect to assistance to be provided established organizations in the area of human relations.
5. Advise the City Council with respect to the establishment of human relations goals and policies.
6. Receive, investigate and attempt to conciliate and otherwise process complaints and inquiries concerning human resource, human relations and human rights that are made to the staff assigned under section 4 of this Ordinance or in any other manner referred to the Department of Community Services.
7.
Establish a subcommittee which shall have the authority to attempt conciliation or mediation or both as to any complaint.
