Dear Friend of Little Zion Baptist (Bowers Hill):

On February 5, 2005 African American leaders and organizations of Chesapeake and Norfolk, VA will respond to the impact of HIV and AIDS in the city’s African American communities in the fifth annual observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness & Information Day (NBHAAD). Information sessions and confidential testing will be held at Little Zion Baptist Church (Bowers Hill Chesapeake) to encourage citizens to get educated, get tested, and get involved with HIV/AIDS as it continues to devastate Black communities.

“Seventy-two African-Americans are infected with HIV every day.” “African-Americans make up approximately 12 percent of the population of the United States, yet 38% percent of total AIDS cases reported in this country are among members of the Black community. In 2003, more African Americans were reported to have HIV/AIDS than any other racial/ethnic group. In Virginia, 59 percent of people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS are Black.”
Chesapeake is one of the 60 cities across the U.S. that will sponsor programs on February 5, 2005 to call attention to the problem and seek solutions to halt the epidemic. Initiatives planned in recognition of NBHAAD in Chesapeake include:
