Lightbulb How the Drexel Phi Psis Celebrated Thanksgiving

Phi Psi gives back to community
By Adam Thomas

Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity celebrated its fourth annual tradition of preparing and serving a Thanksgiving meal for the needy and homeless at St. James Church at 38th and Chestnut streets Nov. 24.

The current brothers and alumni volunteered early that morning by preparing four turkeys and many trays of made-from-scratch stuffing and mashed potatoes. Members of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority baked ten dessert pies and Habitat for Humanity donated a turkey. Both groups assisted in meal preparation or serving food.

"I think I speak for all the brothers when I say we all look forward to continuing this tradition for years to come," Gibi George, Drexel Lebow College and Phi Psi alumnus said.

"I love cooking and cooking for someone who is needy really makes me truly thankful for everything I have," Fellow Phi Psi and College of Information Sciences and Technology alumnus Ryan Findley said. "Since we have been doing this Thanksgiving service event for so long (4 years), it has become one of the few events we can truly call a tradition. Especially now that all of those who first participated are alumni," Harry Wilson, founder and past president of Phi Psi said.

"We are so lucky to have so many kindhearted people in the area," Lee Ann Droud, meal coordinator of the University City Hospitality Coalition, said. Droud has been helping feed the needy for the past 14 years and has been the meal coordinator for the past 12. She is always looking for extra help from volunteers.

"This charitable event provides a meal for those in need who might not have any other place to go," Phi Psi undergraduate Lance Adami said. "It's a very wholesome feeling to know that our efforts allowed these people to enjoy a thankful holiday."
