HISTORY AND PURPOSE
The University - Community Brotherhood Lecture was established in 1982 with two primary objectives. The first objective is to bring to the attention of both our African-American and white communities the important contributions that African-Americans have made and continue to make to the nation and the world. Thus, we honor an African-American who has made a contribution to America, not only as a scholar, but also as a humanitarian. The second objective is to reaffirm, as a university and a community, our deep commitment to enhancing an environment where people of different races may come to study and work together, realizing their full potential.
CELEBRATION EVENTS
The University - Community Brotherhood celebration begins with a morning lecture open to the general public and presented by our honoree, Julian Bond. In past years, the lecture has drawn a diverse audience of students, families, and community members, and filled the capacity of Witherspoon Cinema. Julian Bond will speak about the status and future of the Civil Rights Movement in America. His talk is sure to be provocative and informative. From his view as the Chariman of the NAACP, Julian Bond has a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities for the African American community. Furthermore, he brings to this analysis a wealth of personal experience in the Civil Rights Movement. Join us for what will be an interesting

Julian Bond has been an active participant in the movements for civil rights, economic justice. As an activist who has faced jail for his convictions, as a veteran of more than 20 years service in the Georgia General Assembly, as a university professor, and as a writer, he has been on the cutting edge of social change since 1960.
Julian Bond has served since 1998 as Chairman of the Board of the NAACP, the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the United States. The holder of twenty-one honorary degrees, he is a Distinguished Professor at American University in Washington, DC, and a Professor in history at the University of Virginia.
NC State University is honored that Julian Bond will join us for the 2004 University – Community Brotherhood Lecture, 1:00pm, December 17, 2004.
