Happy Founder's Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!
________________________________________________
One hundred and thirty years ago four women, committed to achieving the highest type of womanhood, met in a parlor in Syracuse, New York, to form an organization that would support them in their quest for excellence and inspire them as they pursued their dreams of higher education. They pledged themselves to a lifetime of a higher spiritual, mental and social culture—a lifetime of valuing individual worth, intellectual growth and service to humanity. We are indebted to Helen M. Dodge, Frances E. Haven, E. Adeline Curtis and Mary A. Bingham for our strong foundation and our firm commitment to high ideals. I wish they could see the organization that Gamma Phi Beta has become today!
Even though our world is very different from the world of our founders, we are still pursuing the highest type of womanhood; we remain committed to our core values: love, labor, learning and loyalty. Our message to our members and our activities are centered on these values. We want to be certain that our actions reflect those values to the world around us.
As the candle is illuminated for your chapter today, remember the sisters who introduced you to Gamma Phi Beta and those who were your role models; remember also the sisters that you brought into our sisterhood and those who looked to you for inspiration. You and I are the legacy of our founders; we are the hands that reach back into our past to link those who have gone before us to those who are yet to come.
Let us pause on the 130th anniversary of our founding to remember our founders, their courage, their friendship, their search for excellence and celebrate the opportunities they created for each of us to explore our potential. Let us honor the tie that binds us to our heritage, to each other and to the future.
In IIKE,
Linda Daniel Johnson
International President
