I like Karamo!

You know, Karamo is really ok with me.

#1. I don't see him as a "Basil" or a man on the DL. For as long as he has been on the show (which is really all that we have to go on, unless anyone knows him personally) he has been completely honest about being gay. I haven't seen him deny it, be with a woman to cover it up, or even lie about it to a woman to make himself feel better. I guess these are the characteristics that I associate w/being in the closet or on the DL.

#2. I understand him not wanting to be classified as feminine or weak, which is how most people are comfortable categorizing gay men. I don't think that this means that he is hiding anything or is being false. I just think that it means that he is not what we expect, so maybe we need to expand our definition of "gay man." It is similar to when white people are uncomfortable with educated or well-off African Americans. Well we aren't trying to trick them or hide our "true ghetto-selves". We are just being who we are, and they need to realize that not all African-Americans are gang-banging, slang-talking, welfare abusers.

Now as a single, black woman, I do feel you on not wanting to see the pool of eligible black men shrink right before your eyes. I'm a little hurt by it as well.

Marie
