Colorado State: Sigma Chi's Skull Fractured

The Fort Collins, Colorado paper and several other news sources are reporting that a Sigma Chi member suffered a skull fracture and is in critical condition after emergency surgery. Sorry to say it, but this is probably not going to make Greek life at Colorado State look any better, and will almost certainly add to the pressure on the task force headed by Colorado's lieutenant governor.

Anyone who may have witnessed the altercation and has not already talked to police is asked to call detective Art Choury at (970) 221-6837.

An argument at an Old Town bar spilled over into an assault at a fraternity house early Wednesday morning, leaving one man in critical condition with a skull fracture.

William Taylor Whitmire, 20, a psychology major from Atlanta, and Sigma Chi member underwent emergency surgery at Poudre Valley Hospital for his injuries.

The assault occurred about 1:15 a.m. outside the Sigma Chi fraternity house, 635 S. Shields St.

It was the continuation of a verbal dispute between the suspect and another Sigma Chi member that started outside The Avenue bar, 151 S. College Ave., said Fort Collins police spokeswoman Rita Davis. What initiated the verbal altercation is unknown.

Police believe alcohol played some role in the assault, but to what extent is not yet known, Davis said.

Police have not identified the suspect because he has not been arrested. Charges are pending, Davis said.

After the confrontation at The Avenue, the suspect and at least one friend went to the Sigma Chi house looking for the fraternity member involved in the argument, Davis said.

Whitmire and Spencer Hunt, a nonactive member of Sigma Chi, tried to get the men to leave.

The suspect hit Hunt. When Whitmire tried to intervene, the suspect knocked him down and Whitmire hit his head on the sidewalk.

Sigma Chi President Brian Hunt said in a statement that neither Whitmire nor Hunt were the men who had been arguing with the suspect outside the bar.

The suspect had brought a baseball bat with him to the Sigma Chi door, but police do not believe he used it to hit the men, said Fort Collins police Officer Dean Cunningham.

A call to 911 was received at 1:18 a.m. When police responded, they found a group of 15 people standing outside, including the suspect, his friend and other fraternity members, Davis said.

Police have identified the suspect and are awaiting the conclusion of an investigation before charges are filed.

The incident comes three days after CSU fraternities went dry. Fraternity presidents voted in early September to ban alcohol in their houses after the death of 19-year-old sophomore Samantha Spady.

Spady was found dead Sept. 5 in the Sigma Pi fraternity house. She died of acute alcohol poisoning.

Following her death and two nights of alcohol-induced rioting in late August, CSU officials clamped down on beer sales at Hughes Stadium and have formed an alcohol task force to study the culture of alcohol on campus.

The next task force meeting is 3 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 18 at the Lory Student Center.

CSU Frat Member Critically Injured Breaking Up Fight
Police Say Charges Pending Against Fellow Frat Member

POSTED: 9:45 am MDT October 14, 2004
A fight between fraternity members at Colorado State University left a man in critical condition Thursday and police said charges are pending against the frat member accused of causing the injuries.

William Taylor Whitmire, 20, a Sigma Chi member and psychology major from Atlanta, underwent emergency surgery at Poudre Valley Hospital Wednesday after suffering a skull fracture outside the Sigma Chi fraternity house, the Fort Collins Coloradoan reported in its Thursday editions. Police said that alcohol was believed to be a factor in the altercation.

According to investigators, the altercation began with a verbal dispute between the unnamed suspect and another Sigma Chi member outside an Old Town bar early Wednesday morning.

Around 1:15 a.m., the unidentified suspect and a friend went to the Sigma Chi frat house looking for the other frat member involved in the earlier argument, police said. The suspect was carrying a baseball bat, according to investigators. Whitmire and Spencer Hunt tried to get the men to leave, but the suspect struck Hunt, witnesses told police.

Police said that Whitmire attempted to stop the altercation and was knocked to the sidewalk, where he hit his head, fracturing his skull.

Police were called, and found more that a dozen people standing outside the frat house. An ambulance rushed Whitmire to the hospital as police began their investigation. It's believed that Whitmire and Hunt were not involved in the earlier incident outside the bar.

A police spokeswoman said the suspect in the alleged attack has been identified, but police were waiting for the investigation to conclude before filing charges in the case.

Wednesday's attack happened three days after all CSU fraternities went dry. The presidents of the local fraternities voted in early September to ban alcohol in their houses after the alcohol-poisoning death of 19-year-old sophomore Samantha Spady at the Sigma Pi fraternity house.
