I got spanked when I was younger. Sometimes with a paddle until I hid it. I usually got hit with a sandle or the belt. I don't think it was abusive, I was bad and believe me I never did the same bad thing twice.
I probably won't hit my kids. Only because of it looking bad in other peoples eyes. When I was a kid me and my cousins always got hit when we were bad.
As for the paddle, we found it like ten years later hiding under the washing machine. When my mom found it I was like uh oh!
