A top Western Kentucky University golfer is recovering from a skull fracture after being struck by a beer bottle at a fraternity party.
Robby Shaw, a former St. Xavier High School star, said yesterday he is doing well and doesn't expect the injury he suffered nearly two weeks ago to jeopardize his playing.
Shaw said he was struck by the bottle after walking away from a fight between two men at his fraternity house near the Bowling Green campus about 2:15 a.m. July 11.
Bowling Green police are conducting an assault investigation, but Officer Jerry Corbitt said yesterday he could not comment on it. Corbitt referred questions to the university's student-activities office.
Officials at WKU were attending a retreat and could not be reached for comment.
Shaw, a 2002 St. X graduate, was state champion in 2001.
He said the fight began when fraternity members asked a man to leave the house. Other members told Shaw the man then threw a full beer bottle at someone else but missed and it struck Shaw, he said.
The police report said emergency room personnel at the Bowling Green hospital where Shaw first was taken told police the bottle hit Shaw on the forehead and "fractured and caved in" that part of his skull.
Shaw's mother, Paula, said her son later was flown to Louisville for treatment and was released July 13. She said his skull had fractured in eight places and required the work of a plastic surgeon.
"We had no idea how serious it was, so it was very scary," she said.
Shaw said he returned to the golf course Tuesday, shooting a 68 at the new Dale Hollow State Resort Park course.
