A breakfast with alumni and undergrads can be a good function. It can be a roundtable; undergrads learning techniques from alums, and alums finding out how the chapter may have changed since they left.
Maybe something having to do with ritual, to give alums a chance to participate one more time?
I like the BBQ idea; a great way for people to talk and meet up, and not as expensive as a restaurant or something along those lines.
