Happy Anniversary to my Undergrad Chapter (32 years young)
The Kappa Delta Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on
the campus of the University Of Alabama In Birmingham on November 17, 1971
and chartered on May 19, 1972.
Beginning with the founding fathers and the subsequent lines, the chapter
has always been the trendsetters for the campus.
Kappa Delta Chapter was the first Black Greek-letter organization to be
founded and chartered on the campus of the University. It wasn't an easy job
to become the first Greek-letter organization on the campus of a
predominantly white University. The University declared that before Omega
Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. would be recognized on campus that an interest
colony would have to be formed and maintained for six months.
The interest colony that was formed called themselves Tau Kappa. Tau Kappa
was: Howard Johnson, Willie Daniels, Dewayne Strickland, David Moten, Amos
Townsend, Michael Russell, Ray Fears, Homer Coke, Warren Brown, Robert
Humphries, Roger Owens and Richard Cunningham.
In August of 1971 Jimmy Harville, Henry Danzy and Rodney Williams and in
September of 1971 Melford Wright became interested members of Tau Kappa.
Due to various circumstances all members of the Tau Kappa interest group
weren't unable to continue on with their dreams of becoming Omegas any
longer.
Tau Kappa soon dwindled down to eight members: Melford Wright, Jimmy
Harville, Rodney Williams, Homer Coke, Michael Russell, Henry Danzy, Warren
Brown and Amos Townsend and on November 11, 1971 these eight great young men
started pledging the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
They were initiated into the Lampados Club of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
Inc. on November 17, 1971. After pledging long and hard dreams became
reality for those eight enthusiastic young men because on May 19, 1972 these
men crossed the BURNING SANDS OF OMEGA and became the charter line known as
the "REVOLUTIONARY EIGHT". The chapter has been upholding the four cardinal
principles of the fraternity until this very day.
Kappa Delta Chapter has a distinguishing list of firsts. Besides being the
first Black Greek and first ever Greek-letter organization on the campus of
the University of Alabama at Birmingham, we were the first organization and
still the only fraternity to be honored with a monument on the campus. This
monument is located in front of the historical Ullman West Building
(formerly Ullman High School). We were also the first Black Greek-letter
organization to have one of its members, Brother Roy Bridges, to serve as
president of the U.S.G.A.
Kappa Delta Chapter strives for MANHOOD, SCHOLARSHIP, PERSEVERANCE and
UPLIFT. These four cardinal principles are the cornerstones of the
fraternity and our chapter. But one other equally important aspect that our
chapter emphasizes is BROTHERHOOD.
