The thing about Britney is that she still is very young. I know that there are a lot of us out there who did equally stupid things when we were her age, and at least we can be thankful that the media wasn't following us around. As MereMere said, I think that celebrities that whine about their lack of privacy are lame because that's one of the things that you have to deal with when you decide to become a star. But I also think that we should cut them at least a little slack because I think most of us realize that it WOULD be hard to deal with really private issues in front of the cameras.

Granted I am a Britney fan, but part of the reason I am a fan of hers is because I think she's so easy to relate to. And honestly, I don't think there's anything she's done that the average American girl wouldn't have done exactly the same way in the same situation. Like, in the Madonna kiss situation -- all reports say that it was basically Madonna's idea, and Britney was like, "Ummm, okay." Let's say you're working with with your idol, who happens to be a twenty year icon of the music industry. You aren't really the gutsiest person, so if she suggests something, are you really going to say, "No, I think that's a bad idea"?

I'm not saying that people shouldn't criticize her, because she's definitely done some stupid stuff. The problem that I see, though, is that people's expectations of her have always been way too high. It was like, as soon as she came out onto the music scene, everybody expected her to be this symbol of what our generation was about. She was expected to be the perfect daughter, the girl next door, America's sweetheart, sexy without being trampy, and a whole bunch of other things all rolled into one. And everytime that she failed to live up to their expectations she'd get bashed. I know tons of people who were/are disappointed in Britney for drinking and smoking and having sex, when they wouldn't bat an eyelash upon finding out that their local junior class president, honor roll cheerleader was doing the same thing . . . and I think that's sad.
