Question the term "frat"

OK, so I was at a social the other day and I refered to one of the guys as a "frat guy" and he got really upset. I was told that the term "frat" has a really negative connotation and to use fraternity when refering to anything. When I asked him about it further he told me that me saying he was in a "frat" was equal to him calling me a c**t. Has anyone heard anything about this or feel this way?
