To reasearch or not research?!
I had a very ummmmmmmmmm shall a say interesting encounter with this woman last week. She is a member of one of the illustrious nphc soroities. Anyway...........I was at the beauty shop about a week ago and as I was sitting under the hair dryer(we all know that is a long process) reading The Divine Nine. This woman was sitting next to me, and when she realized what I was reading she said let me see that. She snatched it out of my hand before I could even respond. She quickly flipped to the pages to find the section on her sorority, then she kind of threw the book back to me and said "I would never read that bulls**t. Now being that I am trying to be a much nicer and more understandable person than in the past, I disregarded her attitude and began to read my book. She proceeded to tell me that reading that book was pointless if I am interested in a sorority because everyones pledge processes are different. Using as much verbal restraint as I could, I politely told her that the book was not about peoples pledge processes, it was was just a brief little history about each greek org and a couple of interviews with members. She said that most of the info is probably wrong and she does not see the point in books like that nor all the websites that publish info because she said that some of the info was probably wrong in other books and on websites, even the national one. She went on to say how if she knew someone was interested in her org and she saw them reading that book, and she asked them a ques about her org and they got it wrong she would whoop their a**. Now at this point it is obvious to me that she was a little upset that I was reading this book and that she was a tad bit on the ignorant side talking about how she would whoop on someone. I told her that unless someone is on line I really do not understand why a MEMBER of an org would ask them any questions about their org, especially with intent to fight if they answered wrong. I asked her how does one choose the right org for him or her if they do not do their research? Her response was that one should go to school and see which group that they click with. She said thats what she did, she said she did no research she just met the girls on campus and they became friends and thats how she chose her org. I was trying to end this convo at this point because people were starting to look and listen and it was really silly. I told her that the book was published for anyone to buy it and if her org did not want their history published I am sure that he could not have published it. I told her that I am sure her meant no disrespect to anyone. I told her that some greek org have other books published for anyone who is interested to read. I also told her that most greeks that I have come across have directed interests to websites and books. I told her that RESEARCH is one thing that most greeks I have come across have stressed. So finally she just said that she still do not think its necessary because books and websites can not tell you everything and the people who write them could be wrong. She said she had no interest in no one elses greek org. so she would never read The Divine Nine, and she said no one other than the members of her org should be concerned with her orgs history..................
This really wigged me out. I have never met nor talked to any greek that did not want you to research their org if you are interested. I mean this lady actually got upset with me because I was reading this book, I just did not get it. She kept her attitude with me for the rest of my time there. I kept reading my book. She was probably in her late twenties or very early thirties. I just think she is too old to be acting like that. She took offense to my reading the book like I was trying to find out her orgs secrets or something. geez! Some people need to lighten up
