Do you think Pre-pledging is right?

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I wanted to get your thoughts on whether or not you felt pre-pledging was necessary. Do you think people should get to know the members of the organization they want to join? Do you even consider getting to know someone or making phone calls hazing or pre-pledging?
