I have no objection to universal service in peacetime either, but so far the 'volunteer' armed forces concept has worked well in the past 30 or so years. Israel has been on a combat footing practically since they became a country; when you're surrounded by neighbors that want nothing more that to wipe you off the map it's nothing unusual to see universal service and long periods in reserve status.
