Juniorgrrl, my friend IS a lawyer!!! She works for a law firm, and her boss is the head of the firm. He has agreed to give her maternity leave (just heard this today from her on IM), but he's being a real jerk about it and questioning her ability to work until the baby is born and put in the "appropriate number of hours," whatever that means.
As this guy is a lawyer as well, he's being very carefully to hint at things without actually doing anything blatantly illegal. She is interviewing for new jobs, and she has some wonderful prospects from other firms and organizations who offer better benefits.
Being a PR person myself, I suggested that if she were to lose her job, she could quite easily get a quick settlement out of him -- he's married to a pretty high profile elected official who probably would not want her name connected with a pregnancy discimination lawsuit.
Never underestimate the power of the press!
