pins and Non-PHC sororities

Has this ever happened to anyone?

I was at work and spotted one of my friends from my major shopping. She was wearing a pin that didn't look like your every-day wear so I asked if she had joined a sorority this fall and which one. She replied "well, i am not supposed to say anything but I am pledging XYZ sorority." She joined a sorority that was not part of panhellenic... a cultural one, to be more specific.

This didn't make sense to me. I mean, this isn't the first time this has happened. (Another girl in one of my classes joined another non-PHC sorority and told me the same thing.) It's not a big deal to me if they don't wanna say... but she almost sounded ashamed to tell me. If you were part of an organization, wouldn't you be proud to say "I am a new member of ABC."

I am sure there is a good reason why new members can't say what they joined, but why would there be such a restriction?

Anyone?
