Somewhat shameless plug, but Rashid's books should seriously be movies. I've already casted them in my head.

I also liked The Night Circus by Emma Morgenstern, about an two young magicians who compete (and fall in love) in an adult-themed circus that attracts a cult-like following. I don't know why it's considered a romance novel as it definitely reads more like fantasy.

Another is This is Where I Leave You bu Johnathan Tropper - so glad it's coming out as a movie soon. one of my favorite short stories, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, came out last year but I've yet to see it. Another one, The Yellow Wallpaper, was a movie in 1989 but I'm not as pressed to go dig it up.
