Are fraternities are welcoming of brothers at other colleges?

My dad was in a fraternity, Phi Sigma Kappa, actually. And he said he sometimes would visit other colleges and meet the other brothers at the college he was visiting. And sometimes they even let him stay a night or two when he was trying to get home.

I'm not sure if these guys were just nice. But do fraternities welcome other brothers from other universities?
