Mother's Pin?

Hi! I searched this forum for this, but I couldn't find anything.

I was just wondering about the mother's pin in the context of just AGD! Is there any sort of tradition behind it, or can it just be given as a gift? Is it "kosher" still if one's mother is a member of a different GLO?

I like to look at HJGreek quite often and I always think about this when I see our mother's pin. Thanks!
