Me personally, I'd go through informal with the intent of joining and if it doesn't work out then go as a junior, understanding that your chances are slim. Your friends may think the sororities that aren't at total are "not as good" as theirs so don't want to direct you that way, even though they know you won't get in theirs. This is not true in that just because a sorority isn't at total doesn't make them unworthy of membership. But of course, I don't know anyone involved here so I could be misinterpreting.
If your friends can't help you get into their house, I might try to avoid getting their input so that they don't cloud your judgment.
