Why do your specific religious beliefs trump everyone else's religious beliefs? Separation of church and state is for a very good reason.
In some way, when it comes to politics, everyone's personal beliefs "trump" the rest of the country. Think about why you choose one politician over another - most likely, it's because that politician shares a belief, or is promoting a cause you think is more important than other causes.

Isn't that, in a way, thinking that your beliefs "trump" everyone else's (or thinking that your beliefs should win out, at the very least)?

I love over-generalizations when it comes to politics. I'll bet you most conservatives couldn't care less, as long as it doesn't increase our taxes.
