The purpose of a slip was two-fold. One for not showing pantylines in your backside, and two because when dresses were made years ago, they didn't have linings, so to ensure that the dress/skirt/blouse wasn't seen through, a slip was worn.
We covered that, and since most skirts/slacks today are lined, and women wear Spanx to avoid VPL and pudge sneak-out, then they're not as necessary.
