UC Merced is the newest school in the University of California system. California has two "systems" - the UC (Cal, UCLA, etc) and the California State system. The UC system takes only the top 10% of graduating students and the Cal States top 25%. Whether you are admitted depends upon your gpa as well as how close you live to the school you would like to attend. There are four UC's and six Cal State schools that are "impacted" (what school is not these days?) and the majority of their students are within a certain radius. Outside of their "zones" you really have to be the top 1-2%.
UC Merced admitted its first students the fall of 2005. It is located in the California central valley outside of Stockton. It is WAY out of town, but lots of room to grow. I believe the majors are mostly math and science based. Probably a great place to colonize as there will not be much else. However, UC Irvine used to be "way out" and now it is in the middle of everything!
