I had an interesting conversation with an old acquaintance today. She and I went to college together, but I don't see her very often anymore. I was going on about buying a new lettered sweatshirt (as I recently realized that mine is just this side of disreputable), and she was giving me an odd look. It occurred to me that I might have been confused, and she might not have been greek.
"Oh, I'm sorry," I said, embarrassed. "I thought you were in a sorority."
"I was," she replied, still giving me that same odd look. "I pledged XYZ when you pledged Sigma Kappa."
"That's right, I forgot!" (I did. I thought she was in a totally different sorority.) "Hey, are you going back for recruitment next year? I'm going to try. Maybe we could go together."
At this point, she was looking at me like I'd lost my mind.
"I
was in XYZ, for a few years," she said finally. "I mean, I
left after a little while, y'know..."
Turns out she disaffiliated from her chapter before the end of sophomore year. Not because she was unhappy with the sisters or anything; just because she'd done it, and now she was finished. She was truly shocked that I hadn't disaffiliated before graduation, and the fact that I am so involved as an alum was foreign to her. According to her, the vast majority of the XYZ seniors that did become alum then disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again, and I would have been regarded as a real oddity in her chapter. Maybe I'm a crazed alumna, but that kind of attitude is just foreign to me. I pledged to be a faithful sister of Sigma Kappa forever, not until I got tired of it.
Thoughts? Of course, I know you ladies bleed lavender and maroon like I do
, but do you run into this often?
