Cloud9, correct me if I'm wrong here, but it is my understanding that there is no Panhellenic Council at NYU. In fact, the majority of sororities on campus are local organizations, which means that they do not have to follow the same set of rules about hazing that National organizations do. Because they aren't governed by National Headquarters, they are able to "get away" (for lack of a better term) with things that NPC sororities cannot, and that is probably why the hazing has continued. An NPC sorority would have been severely reprimanded by their HQ if hazing was going on and had been brought to the school or the GLO's attention.

That's true, we are not panhell as of now because the only national sorority that exists is DPhiE, HOWEVER, as you may or may not know, another sorority, Gamma Delta, is becoming AST, which is national, and would therefore require a panhell council. The problem in this is that the nature of college life in the city, especially at NYU which has no campus, attracts a student body in which the majority is very independent and usually uninterested in greek life. As a result, the sororities and fraternities that exist have a relatively small number of actives, the highest being around 30 and the lowest something like 11. This isn't necessarily bad, because it creates a more intimate connection among members, although 11 is kinda pushing it if you want to survive as an organization. I don't even know that much about how the council works, but I believe there are alot more regulations put on rush such as the length of events, and how many rushees must attend. Again, life at NYU is unique to most colleges in that there is not much of an effort to unite the students---they all have very involved and varied schedules, plus the lack of a campus, real houses for greek organizations(we have dorm accomodations for some, but many don't have any place to hold meetings or events easily), and other factors that would make it difficult for potential members to follow the quidelines of rush. IF they even wanted to do so, people are more casual here and rush although exciting to freshmen, does not take precedence. But you're right, it probably would help to solve other problems, if the greek system here could handle the new regulations.
