Anyway, for work: I usually go in early, so if I'm late, it's legit. When I'm late, it's usually on a day that I decide to go in ON TIME (which, if I'm there right at the beginning of my shift, I tend to feel guilty) and there's an accident or something that causes heavy traffic. Anyway, because I usually go in about an hour or two early on the other days, I don't feel so bad. In personal situations: I just say "I'm running a little late" and leave it at that.
Eeeew...you sound like my mother (who I know is probably older than you are but nonetheless you seem just as responsible & timely as she is )...This is b/c I am the only person in my family that suffers from "Chronic Late Syndrome" (I made that name up)...But that's an entirely different thread...

I, on the other hand, have given some excuses (Hey!! I'm still in Undergrad--the prime time to give excuses)...

I once told my supervisor that my roommate had fainted and I went with her to the doctor (she did really faint but I wasn't with her when it happened)...

I also say the bus didn't show up or there was an accident on the freeway or whatever (you get the idea)...

I also say I'm not feeling well or I have alot of schoolwork to do (i.e. prepare for midterms)--my boss is very understanding about that.
