They way I understood Gamma Zeta history was that the chapter inhabited the house the same time as being chartered.
Back in the day Umass (formerly Massachusetts Agricultural College) did not have a lot of on campus housing.
Most of the fraternity housing was on frat row (most of which was demolished just last year).
