VU's Kappa Alpha Order suspended by national office

Vanderbilt University's chapter of Kappa Alpha Order has been suspended for almost two years by the fraternity's national office for participating in hazing activities earlier this semester.

The chapter, which has more than 40 members and a house at 24th Avenue South and Kensington Place, will not be recognized by the fraternity or the university until the spring of 2004, said Clayton Arrington, Greek adviser at Vanderbilt. It's the chapter's first suspension in its 119-year history at Vanderbilt, said Ashley Worboys, assistant executive director of the national fraternity.

Arrington and Worboys declined to say exactly what KA members made pledges do. A press release from the fraternity's national office said, ''None of the incidents resulted in physical harm or damage to property but violated the university and Kappa Alpha Order policy of zero tolerance for hazing.''

Michael Schoenfeld, Vanderbilt's vice chancellor for public affairs, said the university appreciates its 19 fraternities and 14 sororities for their work in the community and on campus.

''However, we will not tolerate any form of hazing by any organization for any purpose. Period,'' Schoenfeld said.

Arrington said Vanderbilt's Sigma Nu chapter started serving a two-year probation for hazing last spring.
